Those who stand for organics must stand for diversity, because organic agriculture and special cultures go hand in hand. That is why we are working together with our farmers to promote diversity - in the field and on our plates.
Agriculture yields monotonous fruits
Potatoes and corn fields as far as the eye can see. Unfortunately, this landscape is just too familiar. Don’t get us wrong, we all love the wonderful spuds that grow here in the Waldviertel. Sadly, however, in recent decades, monoculture farms have increasingly replaced heritage fruit and vegetable varieties. It is estimated that nearly 75 percent of our crop varieties have disappeared in the last 100 years.
Special varieties – rarely beautiful
Particularly special cultures have now become true rarities in domestic agriculture. But if there is truth in the proverb “If you want to be desired, make yourself rare”, help is on its way. For some time now, people have been attracted to the preservation of special cultures. They are consciously committed to the preservation of rarities and old varieties.
Whoever says organic must also say diversity
You will find many who are of this opinion at SONNENTOR, because we on principle against monocultures. We find that diversity and organics go hand in hand and we are actively supported by our farmers. Unsurprisingly, biodiversity contributes to humus build-up and thus ensures healthy, fertile soils, which are essential to our farms. In addition, the variety on the field naturally protects the plantlets from pests and diseases.
We love the taste of this!
Another side effect of biodiversity that cannot be underestimated: with increasing biodiversity, our plates become more colorful and delicious. Curious? On our Frei-Hof we experiment with many rare fruit and vegetable varieties. Visit us and let our organic farmers introduce you to permaculture.
